BACH UND WOHLTEMPERIERTES KLAVIER
It is not so unusual for highly respected figures to end up in prison. Yet many Bach lovers may still be surprised to learn that our Johann Sebastian spent 28 days in jail in Weimar “because of his obstinate behaviour.”
Bach made productive use of his time behind bars, writing the first of the 24 preludes and fugues for his great and famous collection while under arrest — although “well-tempered” does not refer to the freezing temperatures within the prison walls.
Angela Hewitt presents a selection from this work and also treats us to Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia. Anyone who wants to know how Bach improvised should come and listen!
