Suyoen Kim

At the age of sixteen, Suyoen Kim was already receiving attention by the international music scene. In 2003, she was labeled a "brand new world star" by the Danish "Jyllandsposten". Her recording of Karl Amadeus Hartmann's "Concerto funebre" with the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, conducted by Pietari Inkinen, was recommended by BBC Radio 3 as the best available recording of this concerto.

Suyoen Kim was born in Münster, Germany, in 1987 and received her first violin lesson with Houssam Mayas by the age of five. Four years later, she began her studies as a "Jungstudent" at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Abteilung Münster with Professor Helge Slaatto,where she graduated in 2008. Afterwards, she obtained her masters at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Prof. Ana Chumachenco in 2010. 

As a soloist, Suyoen Kim has performed with internationally acclaimed conductors such as Kurt Masur, Eliahu Inbal, Myung-Whun Chung, Steven Sloane, Jan Latham-Koenig, Peter Ruzicka and Walter Weller.

She has taken masterclasses with Rainer Kussmaul, Ida Haendel, Ana Chumachenco and Elizabeth Walfish. Upon invitation by Seiji Ozawa, she participated in the International Music Academy Switzerland in 2005 and 2006.

Suyoen Kim has appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as: Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Norlands Operan Orkester, Hermitage Theatre Orchestra St. Petersburg, Copenhagen Philharmonie, Baden-Badener Philharmonie, Münchner Symphoniker, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, Orchestre Philharmonie de Strasbourg, Bochumer Symphoniker, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Niederrheinische Sinfoniker, Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn and Seoul Symphony Orchestra. 

In 2009, Suyoen Kim received 4th prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium, Brussels. In 2006, she was awarded 1st prize at the International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition Hannover. In 2005, she was presented with the Young Artist Award of the State of Northrhine-Westphalia. In 2003, she was awaded 1st prize at the International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart in Augsburg, also winning the audience award and the prize for the best interpretation of Contemporary Music.

Suyoen Kim is first concertmaster of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since January 2018. Since 2019, she has been a member of the prestigious Artemis Quartet. 

She plays the Stradivarius "Lord Newlands" from 1702, which is kindly sponsored by the Nippon Music Foundation.

From 2010 to 2012, Suyeong studied at Kronberg Academy with Ana Chumachenco. These studies were funded by the Steigenberger/Rath Scholarship.
