The second evening combines a sense of new beginnings with a sense of mastery in a particularly striking way. The Piano Concerto No. 1 shows Beethoven still engaged in dialogue with the classical tradition; the Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor,” finally reveals its full grandeur and brilliance. This makes it clear how Beethoven expanded the genre and gave it a new dimension.
