Rostrospektive

On the Life and Achievement of Mstislav Rostropovich
Biography

This book is a three-part exposition of the life and work of Rostropovich, as seen from different angles. One part contains an extensive pictorial record of some of the most important stages of his life. In the second are two detailed accounts about Mstislav Rostropovich – “Slava, The Journalists’ Darling”, as seen by a music critic, and “A Twentieth Century Revolutionary”, as seen by a famous cellist who, as a fellow Russian, has had the privilege of following and partly accompanying Rostropovichs’ life to date in many different ways. The title of the book  – “Rostrospektive” – refers in particular to the exhibition of the same name at the third Cello Festival in Kronberg which was held from 16 to 19 October 1997 in honour of Mstislav Rostropovich on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. Much of this exhibition is reproduced in the pictorial section.

Bowed Arts

Reflections of Bernard Greenhouse on his life and music
Biography

Bernard Greenhouse, the “nobleman” among cellists, recounts his life as an artist. He relates his experiences with teachers such as Pablo Casals and Emanuel Feuermann. He talks about his friends, colleagues and role models and, not least, about his years with the Beaux Arts Trio, which he co-founded, shaped and affected as a cellist over 30 years. Readers learn something about his childhood and his first cello lesson in New Jersey, share in his experiences as third oboist in the Navy Band and in his love of sailing and good food. They also discover Bernard Greenhouses’ great sense of humour together with his tremendous energy and charm in his tales. There is never any doubt about his great love for music or the deep sincerity he feels towards his profession and vocation – something he wishes to pass on to his students.

The second part of the book follows the emigrant János Starker in his new home country, the USA, where his international reputation as a soloist and great teacher became firmly established.

Annalisa Lodetti Barzano / Christian Bellisario

Signor Piatti

Cellist, Composer, Avantgardist

Alfredo Piatti (1822–1901) could be described as a child prodigy, a virtuoso, a pioneer, an avant-garde and kindly man and a sensitive artist. He was not only a composer and an Italian cellist; he also became a key person in the music scene in 19th century Europe. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, the authors Christian Bellisario and Annalisa Lodetti Barzanò attempt to grasp the versatile personality of Alfredo Piatti. Equipped with many witness accounts by friends, colleagues and critics, they embark on a journey to discover the roots of an artist, who was not just satisfied to be an interpreter of music, but became a forerunner of the modern style of cello playing.
