2016 Chamber Music Connects the World, Junior
Born to a musical family, Ungerleider began cello studies at the age of five in Sudbury, Massachusetts. He studied with Ronald Feldman in Boston; at Juilliard with Joel Krosnick in the Columbia-Juilliard joint program; and with Frans Helmerson as a Young Soloist at the Kronberg Academy (2014-2016). He received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in Mathematics and Statistics and a Master in Music from Juilliard. He has been mentored by many of the leading musicians of our time, including Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, András Schiff, Steven Isserlis, David Geringas, Gary Hoffman, Laurence Lesser, and Paul Katz.
Ungerleider has been the recipient of top prizes from the Koussevitzky Young Artist Awards and the National Federation of Music Clubs. In 2015 he was awarded the Frank Huntington Beebe Grant. He is also a previous winner of the International Crescendo Music Awards, and from competitions hosted by the Harvard Musical Association, and the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition of the Chamber Music Foundation of New England.
Ungerleider has performed as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician across the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. He has performed concerti with the Berkshire Symphony, Bergen Symphony, Brevard Symphony, Thayer Symphony, and the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic, among others.
Ungerleider has performed in collaboration with many of the great innovators in music today, including performances on NPR+WQXR with Grammy Award winners Bela Fleck and Leonard Slatkin. He collaborated with Michael Tilson Thomas for a television series entitled "Masterclass," available through HBO and PBS. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, and as featured performer at the Aspen Festival, Brevard Festival, Chautaqua Festival, Kneisel Hall, Ravinia's Steans Institute, and Music@Menlo. In 2016, Ungerleider joined the roster of Villa Musica in Rheinland-Pfalz.
Committed to expanding traditional boundaries, since 2014 Ungerleider has been a member of "Break of Reality", a world-renowned 3cello+drummer rock band. While rooted in classical music, the band travels across the spectrum from classical to pop, rock, and other genres of music.
Ungerleider plays on a cello crafted by Raphael Gagliano, ca. 1742, on generous loan from Florian Leonhard Fine Violins.
