Kronberg Academy Festival 2019 | Beethoven and the viola? - An introduction to the concert Viola, Viola!
Ludwig van Beethoven wrote only a handful of major works for the viola. But why? A unique violin concerto, a whole host of sonata masterpieces for violin and cello – but where are the great viola works from the pen of Beethoven the violist? Yes, that’s right, Beethoven was himself a viola player with the court orchestra of Bonn.

Beethoven and the viola?

An introduction to the concert Viola, Viola!

Yet despite this, he did not leave major solo viola works for posterity. Dr Norbert Gertsch (of publishing house G. Henle Verlag) tells us how viola players need to dig a little deeper to strike gold with him...
