Career Development
or: On the path to earning money as a musician

Being a musician is a fulfilling and yet demanding profession. It is far more than just a job, requiring both talent and passion.
Details >

Artistic excellence lays the foundation but is rarely enough on its own. The music profession involves a whole range of activities which have little to do with artistry. These non-musical factors can, however, have a major influence on the beginnings and progression of a career in music. This is nothing new: the romanticised image of an artist’s life has never matched reality. So what is needed and what can help? The lecture sets out to shed light on several facets of the music/musicians’ market.

Presentation

What influences the response, volume and timbre of my instrument? How can I optimise this?

Mastering the technical challenges and an authentic musical expression are the keys to the successful performance of a composition.
Details >

To achieve these things, the instrument needs to respond easily and produce a rich variety of harmonic colour. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Zwieg (Larsen Strings A/S) and Prof. Mauricio Fuks (Indiana University Jacobs School of Music) provide insights into how instruments, strings, bows and bowing techniques interact with one another, and into what can be done to influence qualities such as response, articulation, volume and tone.

What is the perfect violin?

Does the perfect sound exist? Where is the perfection in nature? The answer, here, is the individuality in diversity.
Details >

In principle, all violins look alike and their sound is recognisable as the “violin”. Nevertheless, judgements of the violin’s tone are as different as the characters of the musicians. For centuries, violin makers have put their heart and soul into creating instruments. This results in extremely personal, inspired works of art. Master luthier Ekkard Seidl presents a range of violin models and explains each of their typical tonal characteristics.

Out of the clear blue sky

What an incredibly colourful kaleidoscope are Mozart’s five violin concertos!
Details >

In his talk, Dr. Wolf-Dieter Seiffert (G. Henle Verlag) chiefly looks at how astonishingly creative Mozart is in his approach to strict (concert) convention without ever breaking its rules. He also examines how Mozart’s manuscripts show that, although they supposedly came “out of the clear blue sky” (Alfred Einstein), a good deal of compositional effort was needed to complete each of the five (why “only” five?).
