Yuri Bashmet Viola Foundation

The Yuri Bashmet Viola Foundation's mission is to support gifted young violists by providing scholarships to attend international masterclasses and competitions and by lending top-quality musical instruments to deserving players.

Inspired by Kronberg Academy's first Viola Festival, Yuri Bashmet established the foundation in 1998 and entrusted its management to Kronberg Academy. Mr Bashmet donated his performance fee for the festival to provide the start-up capital for the foundation. His efforts were supplemented by the generous contributions of other committed patrons. William Harris Lee of Chicago (USA) gave a first-class viola to the new foundation and another collector donated a historically significant bow once owned by Paul Hindemith. In 2000 the violin makers Ekkard Seidl of Markneukirchen and Jon van Kouwenhoven from Connecticut (USA) each donated one of their master instruments to support the foundation's efforts.
