Rostropovich Cello Foundation

"I would like to fulfil my long-standing dream of establishing a new foundation, the aim of which will be to open up more education opportunities to gifted young cellists."
(Mstislav Rostropovich, 1997)

In support of Kronberg Academy's mission, Mstislav Rostropovich set up a foundation in 1997 to foster a new generation of exceptionally gifted cellists, assigning management of the foundation to Kronberg Academy. The foundation awards scholarships to outstanding cello students and provides opportunities for young cellists to work on and perform chamber music with world-famous soloists.

To supplement the activities of Kronberg Academy's instrument trust, the Rostropovich Cello Foundation procures high-quality, modern instruments for loan to scholarship recipients. In so doing, the foundation aims to foster an exchange of ideas between young musicians and contemporary instrument makers. Instruments are generally on loan for two-year periods although extensions may be negotiated on an individual basis.

To qualify for support, potential recipients must have actively participated as a student in Kronberg Academy masterclasses or as a junior in Chamber Music Connects the World. Alternatively, they must have reached the second round of either the Pablo Casals Cello Competition or the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann.

Please note that applications may not be made to the foundation. Grant recipients are chosen on the recommendation of the Foundation's Board of Directors.

The Rostropovich Cello Foundation was founded under the patronage of the Deutsche Bank Foundation and continues to depend on contributions from committed patrons. For more information on how to support the Rostropovich Cello Foundation, please contact:
